But a compromise deal was never struck. In the end, the dispute was resolved not by negotiation but by the total victory of one side over the other. In the summer of 1453 the last English force, under the command of the earl of Shrewsbury, was defeated at Castillon, and the English expelled from Aquitaine once and for all. The dominions of the English crown were henceforth confined almost entirely to north of the Channel. To the south, only the port of Calais was left. Just as the fortunes of the English monarchy in France ebbed and flowed, so too did its fortunes in the British Isles.
Three weeks later, he died. Richard was now heir to his father's crown. The question still remained of how the brothers' respective responsibilities were to be defined. In Michaelmas 1183 their father put a proposal to them. Richard should succeed to the position of his deceased brother: in other words, he should become his father's heir apparent, while John should take over as viceroy in Aquitaine. There were a variety of ways in which both he and they needed each other. They looked to the king for the resolution of major disputes - less because they stood in awe of him than because submission to him entailed no loss of face. At a more basic level they also looked to him for the regular flow of patronage.
