Throughout this period, the Indian community managed to navigate their various Portuguese and Omani (and, later, their British) masters with relative equanimity, effortlessly succeeding in ingratiating themselves with all of them. The Portuguese, as defenders of Christendom against Islam, were relatively hostile to interaction with Muslims and favoured the Hindu Vanias for developing their regional trade. But the Omanis too saw the advantage of working closely with their Indian associates. The Indians knew the geography of the interior well and could act as sponsors for potentially treacherous caravan expeditions, they were also prepared to act as important financiers in trading initiatives to both India and the Americas.
9 Tharia Topan (1823–1891) is perhaps the most famous example of an Indian rising to prominence in Zanzibar, and managing to simultaneously win favour with both the Omani Sultan and the British colonial authorities. 10 The place of Indians as well-established, vital cogs in the early commercial success of Zanzibar is illustrated most powerfully through the words of the third Aga Khan in his 1918 book, Indian in Transition: Commerce in every branch, the development of agriculture, the supervision of works of public utility, the higher forms of skilled labour, the exercise of no insignificant share of political influence amongst the chieftains—all these were in Indian hands for many a decade before Europeans began the work of thorough and scientific exploration of the East African mainland.
Bearing in mind the caveats outlined above, the number of qualified medical practitioners rose from a modest group of approximately 30 at the start of the century to a much more substantive community of around 200 people in 1940. *** It is clear that the history of Kenyan Indian medical practitioners trained in western medicine is intimately bound up with the evolution of western medicine in the Indian sub continent, but a word of caution is advised. 1 Registered and licensed medical practitioners in Kenya Year CMS European Indian Priv.
