For dogs, the sensitive period of socialization occurs when puppies are between 3 and 12 weeks old. Although the sensitive period of cats is less well defined, kittens are most responsive to socialization when they are between 2 and 9 weeks of age. THE EARLY WEEKS: NEONATAL AND TRANSITION PERIODS Both dogs and cats give birth to altricial (immature) offspring that are completely dependent upon their mothers for warmth, food, elimination, and protection during the first few weeks of life. Although there are some differences between newborn puppies and kittens, they are at similar stages of development during the first two weeks of life.
In contrast, other researchers found that stray (or feral) dogs in urban areas will form stable social groups and demonstrate long-term affiliative relationships when there is no human care or intervention. In these studies, individuals tended to forage alone for food, but small stable groups defended common territory, raised puppies cooperatively, and demonstrated behaviors consistent with ranked social hierarchies. Together, these studies suggest that the domestic dog, just like his wolf cousin, modifies social behavior in response to the distribution and abundance of food and other resources.
